Toptal alternatives for hiring senior engineers

Toptal is a freelance talent marketplace. Toptal says it accepts fewer than 3% of the 200,000+ people who apply to its network each year.[1] If a vetted contractor billed through a platform is what you need, it is a reasonable choice. If you want an engineer on your own team, the alternatives below work differently, and cost differently.

When Toptal is the right call

If you need a specialist for a defined project and expect the engagement to end, paying for time through a marketplace fits the work. Toptal starts each engagement with a trial of up to two weeks and does not bill it if you are not satisfied.[9]

When an alternative fits better

If the engineer is meant to stay, to own a codebase or grow into a lead, ongoing billing works against you: the cost never stops, and the person is not yours. Toptal bills for time worked, typically invoicing twice a month on Net 10 terms, for as long as the engagement runs.[4] Toptal says hiring one of its freelancers full-time is possible, but does not publish the terms or fee.[11]

A contingency recruiter works the other way round. Silver.dev charges a one-time placement fee of 25% of the hire's first-year salary.[5] After that, the engineer works for you, on terms you set.

The alternatives, by model

Other freelance marketplaces work much like Toptal: vetting on the way in, billing for time while the work lasts. Compare them on trial terms, platform fees, and what full-time conversion costs.

Staffing and staff-augmentation vendors employ the engineer and add a margin to their pay for as long as they work with you. For how that differs from recruiting, see recruiting versus staffing agencies, linked below.

Contingency recruiters, Silver.dev included, find and vet candidates and charge a one-time fee when you hire.

Hiring directly costs no fee, but sourcing and technical screening then come out of your own team's time.

How Silver.dev works

Silver.dev recruits software engineers in Latin America for venture-backed startups. Silver.dev's process is a recruiter screen followed by a live assessment with a vetted software engineer, in the format the role calls for: system design, live coding, AI fluency and more.[3] The assessment is live, not a take-home.

Silver.dev's core model is contingency recruiting, where you hire the engineer directly. It also offers RPO, staffing with the engineer employed through Silver.dev, and Agency of Record.[6] Contingency is the usual route and the one priced above. Silver.dev's direct-hiring fee is paid only after a successful hire and carries a 90-day replacement guarantee.[10]

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Toptal alternative for a full-time engineer?
